to starve: Es más fuerte que to be hungry (tener hambre). Puede usarse en sentido literal o figurado. En inglés británico antiguo, también significaba “morir de frío”, pero hoy es raro.
1. Morir de hambre o estar en peligro de hacerlo por falta extrema de alimento.
The prisoners were starving.
2. Pasar mucha hambre, sin llegar necesariamente a la muerte.
We were starving after the long hike.
3. Privar de algo esencial, no solo comida (uso figurado).
The plants are starving for sunlight.
He starved his team of resources.
4. Hacer morir de hambre (uso transitivo).
The tyrant starved the population.
